A safe, secure home changes so much.
Jeanette is a single mother and grandmother who was raising her kids and grandkids by getting piece jobs – short-term contract jobs that often do not pay well. 2 years ago, Ten Thousand Homes partnered with local leaders to ensure that she and her family had proper housing.
During the construction of her house, it was recognized that her spirit, along with her physical appearance, was changing. One morning Mzwandile (TTH staff) asked her about it and she told him, “I lost hope in my life. I have tried to raise my head high, but it seems like every time I do I get knocked down. It seemed as everyone had washed their hands on me. So now that you are busy building this house for me I feel uplifted, I feel like I have been seen and I’m found and I’m starting to see hope. I now see that God really answers prayers.”
Before Ten Thousand Homes met Jeanette, her prayer was to find a stable job so that she could support her family and build a house.
The generosity of this community practically built a house, but it also built confidence and hope for a better future. During a visit, 2 years after the home was built, Jeanette was happy to inform us that God did not stop answering her prayers and that she now has a steady job as a custodian at a local school.
“Now I have a job! It is difficult, like any job, but I’m able to support my family and I’m busy extending the house, as you can see for yourselves.” She showed our team around, pointing out her plans. “I want to make this space a living room and that space over there I want to build a passageway and add two bedrooms so that we can host more visitors. This is my hope in moving forward.”
